Peaceful Pedasi, How I'll Miss You!

Friday, January 7th

There are times I wonder, during the course of my days, what it is I'm looking for and what I can do to live my life differently.  As I spend time in Panama, I contemplate that, and I also have tried to figure out how those ex-pats, the ones who choose to live here though they're from other parts of the world, have made it work.  Pedasi, for example, is a small and kind of quaint, sort of sleepy village town, with a charm and tranquility of its own.  How do those who live here by choice manage?  Some have moved here for surfing, or just to make money by opening a restaurant, others are part of a growing movement to build gated communities (though those folks don't seem to be hanging out in Pedasi itself), and some are here as retirees, just relaxing, traveling through Panama and Central America, with once a year visits back to their homeland.  While their numbers are small, especially compared to Boquete and Panama City, for example, they live here, scattered around this part of the peninsula.  Is this, I wonder, something to aspire to?  Or is my long-range goal still moving to Asia for part of the year, volunteering and traveling?  Would I be content to live in this kind of environment, or would I find it too confining, too lonely at some point, and perhaps, dare I say, too hot?

In just over a little while I'll be getting on the local bus (a small van, actually) that will take me to Las Tablas,  and from there I'll get on a big bus to Panama  City.  Time to pack up and say goodbye.

Here are a few photos from my bike ride to the beach yesterday.  My butt is sore from that bike, but it was such a joy to be able to ride six miles in the heat through this beautiful countryside.

Early morning on the main street...houses attached to each other, many are open to the street with bars that come down at night.  Very lovely!

The local cemeteries are so pristine and full of flowers, and most have little personal items on them as well.

Playa del Toro, where I rode the bike to.  This is looking real pretty, but I have to say, much of the beach was covered with trash, as it's where the locals come a lot.

As I rode the bike down the long dirt road to the beach, the scenery was beautiful.  The Pacific is in the background.

Hard to see here, but the Pacific is in the background as well.  It was sooooo hot.  But I loved it!

The mountain bike I rode the past two days is in the foreground, leaning on the tree.  Needs a softer seat.  My butt is still killing me.

Till later,
Judi
